Buckle up your seatbelts, guys, gals, and nonbinary pals, because I’m going to tell you some secrets. These are the things I, as a senior, have accumulated throughout the years of torturous performance tasks, assignments, exams, quizzes, recitations, memorizations, etcetera, etcetera. So, shit down, shut up, and enjoy the experience of my four-am-caffeine-induce-self-hatred-fuelled-writing-extravaganza.

  1. Those black spots on your nose doesn’t really matter.

  2. Skipping classes one time will not ruin your life; skipping classes multiple times will result to consequences only if you get caught.

  3. That person you’re trying to impress will mean nothing to you in college.

  4. Bring coffee to school, draw stick figures, sing offkey, and ignore people who make fun of you.

  5. Don’t care about people hearing you eat in class, they’re just jealous you got food.

  6. Being popular can’t and will never be something that defines who you are.

  7. Appreciate your teachers.

  8. Bullying others doesn’t make you look cooler, it only makes you seem like an idiot with a serious brain problem.

  9. You can say NO.

  10. Talk to the kid sitting alone; it may not change your life, but it can impact theirs drastically.

  11. Participate in school events.

  12. You are by no means obliged to look pretty. You already are.

  13. But, that doesn’t mean you can’t wear make up or any jewelry, as long as it contributes to the way you see yourself positively, why not wear both?

  14. Speak the way you are more comfortable with.

  15. Nobody will laugh at you if you seat by yourself, but if they do, eat them as well.

  16. Utilize the library, not just for printing.

  17. Don’t wait to message someone back to look cool, you may lose your chance/

  18. Tell your friends how much you love them.

  19. Cherish your time together.

  20. Help confused underclassmen, be nice to then, remember your suffering in the previous years.

  21. Compliment other people, it won’t make you look gay.

  22. That fight you had with anybody really isn’t that big of a deal.

  23. It’s okay to cry.

  24. Don’t let sweet words and your desire for romance stop you from forming platonic relationships.

  25. Don’t be afraid to voice your fears, there will always someone who is willing to listen.

  26. Your grades don’t define who you are.

  27. What’s more important is your mental health, that you get enough sleep, and that you are happy with your life.

  28. Don’t overexert yourself.

  29. Stop waiting for Friday to come and live in the moment.

  30. Remember that life does go on.

Your state of mind, your physical health, your broken relationships; they are not the rent you have to pay to have a proper education in this world. Remember, your body is made of the same elements that lions are built from. Seventy percent of you is the same kind of water that beats rocks to rubble, wears stones away, and wash civilizations in one swoop. You DNA translates into the same twenty amino acids that wolf genes code for. When you look at yourself in the mirror, or in front of you PC, remember, the air you breathe fuels forest fires capable of destroying everything they touch. On the days you feel ugly, remember, diamonds are only carbon. You are so much more.
