music video analysis

In the analysis of the video, มีสิทธิ์อะไร : SPF [Official MV], from a thai musical band, it is clear that the characters portrayed in the music video have a semi - stereotypical love story.

A girl from a rich family, (see the car from the scene where the guy saves the girl and how much money she had when they ate out), fell in love with a poor boy (the way he dressed, the situation of his home, and how little money he has as seen in the scene where they ate out).

The girl's father decided, then, to interfere in their love by first scolding the girl in the car, then choosing a guy that is to be married (as I assumed these story genres go to) which is the same status as the girl's family.

Of course, since the girl loves the poor boy so much, she ran away from home and lived with the boy she loves (don't do this kids, some guys will probably ran away after such faithful accident, if you know what I mean). However, circumstances were not in their favour as the girl was hospitalized and the boy, unfortunately, died.

Moving on, to answer the question, Is the visual affecting the song or is the song affecting the video?, I would say both in different ways.

First, the visual is affecting the song because with the tragic fate both lovers ended up in, the message of the song was emphasized further. Moreover, the viewers was able to related to both the characters and the melody (as evident to the occurrence of one of my classmates actually crying over it). The emotions which flowed from the actor's portrayal of longing for the girl, and the actress's representation of how the girl so loved the boy that she defies the norms that was set for those in the same status as her, clearly enhanced how the song was being taken upon or given meaning of.

Secondly, the song is affecting the video because even though I didn't understand the lyrics, how the instruments were played, the beat of the drums, the force of how the guitar was being strung, the vocals and movement of the lead singer, and other factors incorporated to the making of the song was highly regarded as the setter of the emotion of the music video.

The high notes, the low notes, and everything in between affects how the audience will react on the scene. Of course, when a happy music is playing on the background. the audience will think that the video is a happy ending, but in this case, with the raw emotion and deep longing as well as regret evident in the way the song was sung depicted that it was, indeed, a very very sad portrayal of a love that does not choose between the rich and the poor, a love that knows no bound even in death (as seen on how the poor boy visited his beloved one last time).

The message, in my own understand without the subtitle, was this:

Love knows no bound, nor division. Love is not defined by the amount of money you have nor the number of cars you drive. It is reflected by trust, and longing. It is something that can defy the norms. It is the strength to create your own path. Even if you think you don't deserve the amount of love that you receive, as long as you value that person more than your own, then you will know love.

Also, it can be this:

Don't be stupid thinking it is love, they will leave you as fast as they have appeared. Therefore, cherish the moments you have with one another, for you will never know when they will leave you, permanently. Or just love yourself more than other, or your parents, in that case you won't be as heartbroken as a dead boy's lover was in the end of the video.

In analyzing the next video, now with captions (thank the heavens), I feel oblige to tell you that I am, in fact, on point in saying in the first video analysis that the father did want to daughter to marry the other guy. It is, however, not pointed out that the point of view of the song was the poor boy's P.O.V.

In the song, the girl was regarded as a star. She is someone who is shining brightly in the sky, while the poor boy is a dirt of the earth that 'reached too high'. This symbolizes that the boy didn't think that he deserves the girl until the very end of the music video. Moreover, this symbolism implies the degree of division between the social status of the girl and the boy.

More symbolism was also attached in both the lyrics and the video wherein the singer sang the line. 'the only thing we can do is give up', but the action in the video is the guy looking t\at the girl's photo. This means, in my own understanding, that he is saying to himself to give up the pursuit of the girl, but his heart keeps on urging him to move on, grab her hand, and run to the hills screaming how much he loves her.

The odds, however, are certainly not in their favour as the father and faith (such a little meddler this guy is) keeps on pulling them apart. That is why the poor boy thinks that he is 'an unimportant person' and that she mustn't 'waste precious time' on him. All they have, according to the father, was love, and as the guy continues to sing, he stated that there is more to life than that. But the two lovers doesn't head that part and still depended on each other as either their source of happiness or the anchor that pulls them away from reality of their situation.

All this I can conclude with the help of the caption translated to English for better understanding of the viewers. Such is the essence of the caption that it enables the audience to understand further not just the acting in the film, but also their correlation to the lyrics of the song which it portrays.

The answer to the question, What do you think is the important factor in analyzing a video to get its real meaning? is simply these: the way the characters are acting, the lyrics of the song, and an open mind for the viewers.

Both the way the actors portray their role must be in relation with the emotions woven in the lyrics of the song. The representation can be defined as effective if the viewers can get its meaning even without the subtitle, merely depending on the emotions the actors are giving the audience through their performance.

This factors, along with the viewer's open mind, will be the key in determining the true message of the video.
